About Jose Carlos Gonzalez Hurtado
Jose Carlos Gonzalez-Hurtado was born in Madrid, Spain on May 27, 1964. With a slew of degrees from Pontificia Conmillas/ICADE University in Madrid to his name, various levels of fluency in six languages, including Spanish, English and French, and an impressive career spanning more than twenty years, this Spanish businessman has earned a reputation as an experienced business leader, with particular expertise in “end to end” consumer activities.
Holding degrees in Business Administration and Law, Hurtado started his career with Procter and Gamble (P&G) in 1989, working his way up through various positions over 10 years to become Marketing Director for Fabric Care in Western Europe, in the P&G Fabric and Home Care Global Business Unit. In his career with P&G, Jose Carlos Gonzalez Hurtado served in a number of positions in different business units of the company, ultimately reaching the position of officer of P&G Company and Vice president/Acting President Global Braun, based in Germany – a position that he held from 2006 until leaving the company in 2009. Braun was than an almost $2Billion business and one of P&G’s largest 15 brands globally, with business interests including, inter alia, male and female grooming , household products and hair care. Braun operates in more than 100 countries. During this period, and after a decade of decline, in 2008 market shares reached record high levels in male and female grooming and in hair care businesses. Despite the global recession at the time, Braun profits reached a record high level, improving by more than 5 percentage points in a single year.
Prior to the Braun division, Gonzalez-Hurtado served as General Manager and Member of the P&G Global Leadership Council in Eastern Europe from 2004 to 2006, and held the same position for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza from 2001 to 2004. In both areas, Gonzalez-Hurtado was responsible for significantly growing the company’s business, with P&G in the Ukraine becoming the fastest growing business in the Europe and Middle East region, and one of the fastest growing globally. Under Gonzalez-Hurtado’s leadership P&G in Israel tripled its profit and doubled the number of brands, including the acquisition of Unilever Detergent business. In 2003 Jose Carlos Gonzalez -Hurtado was named Executive of the Year by Israel’s Yediot Ahronot newspaper as a tribute to his skill in maintaining growth of the company during the severe economic downturn at the time.
In 2009, after more than twenty years with Procter & Gamble, Gonzalez-Hurtado accepted a position as Group Chief Commercial Officer and Member of the Executive Board of the Carrefour Group and took up residence in Paris. The Carrefour Group is the second largest retailer worldwide with a global presence in more than 40 countries and with an annual turnover of approximately $135 Billion. The group manages hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience stores and franchised stores in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Gonzalez-Hurtado bears responsibility for the commercial functions of the entire group, as well as the private label brands business, which accounts for 25% of total Carrefour turnover, the Supply Chain for the Group and the R&D, which is responsible for the development of new formats and store types, as well as the qualification of new products.
Gonzalez-Hurtado is married with five daughters. In his leisure time he is an avid sports fan, enjoying basketball, tennis and squash. He also has an interest in the academia and has lectured in law and marketing at Madrid’s Comillas University, and in Tel Aviv’s Kellogg-Recanati business College.
